Struggling with your eyes today? We’ve all been there. Some days it’s mildly annoying and sometimes it feels like your eyes are at war with you, especially when they start swelling.
A few of the most common causes of swollen eyes include:
- Allergens and dust
- Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
- Styes and cysts
These aren’t the only causes, and it’s possible that swollen eyes could be caused by some underlying condition. Visit your doctor as soon as possible if:
- The swelling hasn’t gone down after a day or two
- Your eyes are in pain
- Your vision is impaired
What to Do About Your Swollen Eyes
Allergy-related swelling: Place a cold washcloth on the swollen eye and use over-the-counter antihistamines (oral medicine or allergy eye drops).
You can try to wait out the allergy symptoms or book an appointment if you think that you need prescription allergy medication for more immediate relief.
Swelling from styes and cysts: Place a warm compress on your swollen eye multiple times per day. Styes and cysts often go away on their own, but if not you might need to visit your doctor to get them drained/removed.
Swelling from pink eye: While it’s highly contagious, most of the time pink eye will go away on its own. You can clean the eye with a warm washcloth and avoid touching it to help it recover.
However, you can go to a doctor and have them write you a prescription for eye drops that will heal your eye quicker.
